Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
— Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)

Hello Ordinary Readers,

Discipling has been one of the most influential books in my walk with God. I think I have read it close to 10 times now. It is a highly practical book on great ways to disciple. But more importantly, it focuses on why we should disciple. The book is broken up into three parts:

  1. What is discipline?

  2. Where should we disciple?

  3. How should we disciple?

I think we often talk about the great commission, Matthew 28:19-20, as a command to do missions. But, it is clearly not just sharing the gospel but also discipling. Dever defines discipling as, “helping someone follow Jesus by doing deliberate spiritual good in his or her life” (p. 47). This book has been instrumental in my time working in college ministry. It took time but by the end, I felt our ministry really had built a culture of discipleship.

I would also like to say that I enjoy Dever’s writing style. I appreciate his ability to be straight and to the point while using plain and understandable speech. I think this book is a great read for all Christians, and especially those in a leadership positions.

Happy Reading!
